International Travel Funds

Joe S. Mundy Global Learning Endowment

The Joe S. Mundy Global Learning Endowment provides financial support for CEE students seeking to participate in individual or group international travel. Students may seek funding to help support travel for research, long- or short-term study abroad programs, internships, or just independent international travel.  The endowment gives students the opportunity to live, work, or study in a different culture and by doing so gain a global perspective on engineering, the arts, and geo-politics. International travel fosters independence and understanding and allows students to engage in cross-cultural communication. All of these benefits add value to your Georgia Tech degree and help create the next generation of global engineer-leaders. Mundy scholars have traveled the world. We invite you to be next!

Alex Zickar on a bridge in Amsterdam during his European study abroad trip.

“In the end, I think the most crucial virtue I’ll take away from this summer is tolerance and the importance of accepting peoples’ differences. The world is full of differing ideas, cultures and beliefs. We all carry ourselves in different ways, and getting the chance to explore a bit more of the world has shown me just how important it is to understand how others live their lives. It’s not enough to live life in the dark, sheltered by a blanket of ignorance. I wanted a broader education, and that’s precisely what I got.”

– Alex Zickar, who traveled to Europe with Mundy funds in summer 2014

The Elizabeth B. and William E. Higginbotham Beyond the Classroom Experience Fund is a new opportunity for civil and environmental engineering students to apply their engineering knowledge and skills in real-world situations.

Created in 2017 by alumnus Bill Higginbotham and his wife, Elizabeth, the fund supports outside-the-classroom experiences for a handful of students each year. That could include jobs or internships (domestic or international), research experiences, or other professional learning opportunities.

Eligibility

Only undergraduate or graduate students in the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering are eligible.

Requirements

  • A completed application with an itemized budget of expected work and, if applicable, travel costs
  • An essay detailing specific work plans and the expected outcomes of the experience
  • Proof of the job, internship, or other experiential opportunity, such as a letter of support or offer letter
  • A final report that provides details about the work experience along with photos. Reports are due 30 days after the conclusion of your Beyond the Classroom Experience.

Please Note: Submitting an application does not guarantee funding.

Deadlines and Review Process

  • Applications for spring semester funding are due October 1.
  • Applications for summer semester funding are due March 1.
  • Applications for fall semester funding are due June 1.

Application review generally takes four weeks from the deadline, so you should expect decisions early the following month.
